Roosevelt introduced the fireside chat in 1933 in a series of evening radio addresses. Taking his message directly to the American people, he used the chats to convey information about important legislation, initiatives, and the course of WWII. Today, fireside chats are used more and more often, from conferences and low-key meet-and-greets to television interviews. While the medium may have changed, the intent is the same – to put everyone at ease and leave the audience with more information and knowledge than before. Alderson Broaddus University President, Dr. Tim Barry, uses the fireside chat over the more traditional presentation format of a speaker, script, and formal podium. Instead, viewers are treated to a more off-the-cuff update from the President in a more relaxed setting. As the 2021 – 2022 academic year progresses, the President will be joined by University faculty, staff, and students as they cover a broad range of topics.
