Public Safety officers receive 40-hour Crisis Intervention Team training. They partner with Wellness Center clinicians on every mental-health call.
The Office of Public Safety is led by Capt. Doris L. Huff, formerly a Lieutenant with the City of Buckhannon Police Department. She joined AB in 2022 after twenty years in municipal policing. Her department of eight full-time officers and four part-time officers maintains 24/7/365 coverage of the 170-acre campus.
All AB Public Safety officers are sworn under West Virginia state law, with arrest authority on campus and in immediate adjacent areas. Most have prior experience with West Virginia State Police, county sheriff offices, or municipal departments. All complete the West Virginia Basic Police Academy plus 40 hours of Crisis Intervention Team training within their first year on AB's force.
The department maintains memoranda of understanding with the City of Philippi Police, the Barbour County Sheriff's Office, the West Virginia State Police, and the Barbour County Office of Emergency Services. Combined response capabilities cover everything from minor disturbances to multi-agency emergency operations.
The Public Safety Office is open to walk-ins 24 hours a day, located on the ground floor of Whitescarver Hall (basement entrance via the south porch). Lost-and-found, vehicle registration, and parking permits are handled here. Officers also provide guided campus tours for parent and prospective student visits during low-staffing periods.
