Alderson Broaddus University will host various events for the public as part of their annual Homecoming celebration October 14-17.
Homecoming festivities kick off with the Dr. Robert V. Digman Lecture Series on Thursday, October 14, and continue on Friday, October 15. The Series honors Dr. Robert V. Digman for his outstanding service to Alderson Broaddus University. Having devoted his life to the institution and its students, he continues to support the growing campus. In addition, the lecture series highlights outstanding alumni in their various fields of work and personal accomplishments.
As in the past, the lectures will be held in the Crim Dining Hall at noon each day. Easily accessible within the AB Campus Center, the entire Series is open to the public, students and staff.
On Thursday, October 14, Dr. Nancy A. Johnston will open the Digman Lecture series. A 1970 nursing graduate of Alderson Broaddus College, Dr. Johnston continued her education at the University of Pennsylvania, earning her master’s degree in nursing. She also earned a post-masters certificate as a family nurse practitioner and later earned her Ph.D. in nursing with a human physiology minor from Penn State University.
Dr. Johnston has devoted her life to the field of nursing both through hands-on experience in hospitals and through teaching future nurses at several colleges. Over the years, she has had several honors bestowed upon her, including Pennsylvania State Nurses Association Nurse Educator Award, Pennsylvania Nurses Foundation Pauline Thompson Clinical Nursing Research Award, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from AB.
In addition, Dr. Johnston has given numerous presentations and is published in many scholarly journals, including Biological Research for Nursing and Visions: The Journal of Rogerian Scholarship.
The lecture series will conclude on Friday, October 15, with Dr. Hubert “Hu” Fleming. A 1978 graduate of Alderson Broaddus and native of Braxton County, West Virginia, Dr. Fleming double majored in chemistry and applied mathematics. He went on to Cornell University and was awarded M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering. He is also a graduate of Harvard Business School, holding an MBA in international finance. Hu’s professional career spans 40+ years and includes acting as a Senior Advisor with Morgan Stanley and Partner at two private equity firms, Antelope Partners and Upwell Water. He was formerly CEO of KMX Corporation and President Severn Trent.
Hu is an internationally recognized authority in global infrastructure, having led some of the world’s largest water, energy, and transportation projects. Awards include the 2009 GWI Global Water Project and the 2019 Frost & Sullivan Visionary Innovation Award. He has been invited to speak at the United Nations twice and several U.S. congressional committees and the European Union. Hu serves on several boards of directors and advisors, including West Virginia University, the World Bank, NATO’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council, and several companies and charitable organizations. Hu has published extensively, is the author of three books, and more than 150 publications and 12 patents.
Public Homecoming celebrations continue on Saturday, October 16, with women’s rugby taking on Post University on the AB Grass Rugby Field at 11:00 a.m. Battler Football will also be in action Saturday to take on Glenville State College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. Rounding out the action will be the Women’s soccer alumni game slated for 6:00 p.m.
The annual Homecoming Worship Service will be held Sunday morning and led by Pastor Jon Villers ’89. The service will take place at Philippi Baptist Church, located at 69 Church Street in downtown Philippi. Worship begins at 10:30 a.m., and all are welcome to attend.
As official Homecoming events wind down Sunday afternoon, the public is invited to watch AB women’s soccer at 2:00 p.m. as they take on West Virginia State or men’s rugby at 2:00 p.m. as they go up against Kent State University.
