Events to take place Saturday, Feb. 21, at 10 am and 4 pm, respectively
Due to the illness of one of the performers, the Alumni Vocal Masterclass and Recital of Ms. Jackline Madegwa and Ms. Tia Price on February 21 (Saturday) has been postponed until further notice.
PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Alderson Broaddus University School of Music is pleased to present an Alumni Vocal Masterclass and a Vocal Recital on Saturday, Feb.21.Ms. Jackline Madegwa and Ms. Tia Price, both graduates of Alderson Broaddus, will present a Vocal Masterclass at 10 am and a Vocal Recital at 4 pm in Wilcox Chapel. Collaborating at the piano will be Mrs. Lillian Long, associate professor in AB’s School of Music. Admission is free for both events.
Soprano Jackline Madegwa, a native of Eldoret, Kenya is a specialist of African music and dance. As a classical singer, her stage credits include The Queen of the Night, in Mozart’s Die Zauberföte, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohemé and Cio Cio San in Madama Butterfly. Her honors include grand prize winner of the Bel Canto Foundation Competition in Chicago, Adrian Boyer Concerto Competition in Michigan, the Audience Favorite in Classical Idol V Rochester, NY, the 2nd National Spirituals Solo Voice Competition, the National Association of Teachers’ of Singing -Illinois district Competition and the West Virginia Mountain State Classical Competition.
Jackline was featured as a Stern Fellow at the 2011 SongFest summer program in Malibu, Calif. and as the Soprano soloist for the world premiere of Glenn McClure’s Emancipation Oratorio together with the Rochester Oratorio Society in Rochester, N.Y., and Chautauqua Institute, N.Y. She holds a Master of Music from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a bachelor’s degree in musical arts and psychology from Alderson Broaddus, and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in vocal performance and literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She is a student of Dr. Ollie Watts Davis.
Tia Price is an ardent performer of opera, oratorio, and art song. She can be heard singing works such as Verdi as well as works by contemporary composers. In recent seasons she has appeared as Mère Marie in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmelites at the Lyric Opera of Baltimore, and Rose in Delibes’ Lakmé, as well as Ferdinand in Douglas Buchanon’s Ariel’s Tempest- an opera created specifically for the Peabody Opera Outreach program. She also performed as the mezzo soprano soloist in The Defiant Requiem presented at the Peabody Institute under the direction of Maestro Murry Sidlin.
Ms. Price is very passionate about celebrating music in the community, and can be heard performing and seen organizing various concerts in the Baltimore City area. In the 2014, Ms. Price was the recipient of the Peabody Presser Music Award and used the funds to create an innovative music program for the Baltimore City Community entitled, “This Is My Voice.” This year she organized the first annual Baltimore Concert for Peace which involved a variety of artists from gospel, to rap artists, to meditation music centered on a theme of peace. The concert was sponsored in part by the Baltimore War Memorial Arts Initiative.
In May, Price will perform the role of Alma in the new opera Stinney composed by Frances Pollock. She is also a key organizer of the opera which has been funded in part by a Diversity Innovation Grant from the Johns Hopkins University.
Ms. Price obtained a Bachelor of Arts in applied music from Alderson Broaddus in 2012, and a Master of Music from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under the tutelage of the eminent mezzo soprano Denyce Graves. She was a recipient of the Arno and Ruth Drucker Scholarship, and has also received many awards including the Jack and Virginia Clinard Vocal Award; winner of the Johns Hopkins Woman’s Club Scholarship; and was the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Peabody Presser Music Award. Miss Price resides in Baltimore, Md.
