AB Assistant Professor Aaron Maxwell Awarded Grant

Also recently awarded Geographic Information Systems Professional Certificate

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Alderson Broaddus University is pleased to announce that Aaron Maxwell, assistant professor of environmental science in the College of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM), has been awarded an ACA Faculty Fellowship Grant by the Appalachian College Association. The Appalachian College Association helps provide grant opportunities for faculty development. This grant will allow Maxwell to work towards his doctorate degree over the summer.

“This grant means a great deal to me as it will aid in the completion of my doctorate and my research,” Maxwell states. “I am honored that my proposal was accepted.”

For his research, he investigates the mapping of surface coal mines using satellite data and aerial photography. Thus far, this has resulted in two publications and a third that has been accepted but not yet printed. With this grant, he will be able to support his fourth and final research paper which will investigate the mapping of mine reclaimed lands using terrain characteristics.

This accomplishment will be of great value to the institution as it supports the research efforts that are currently being pursued in the College of STM and his research lab, the Alderson Broaddus Geospatial Lab (ABGSL).

“This grant will be very useful in the ABGSL lab as I hope to incorporate students in my research, as I haves done with prior research projects,” said Maxwell.

In late January of 2015, Maxwell was also awarded his Geographic Information Systems Professional Certification by the GIS Certification Institute that he has pursued over the last six months. This is one of the top certifications pursued by GIS professionals. This will benefit the University directly with its new integration of Geospatial Technologies in the Environmental Science Program and the addition of a GIS minor.
