AB wins six public relations awards

March 16, 2022 – The Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) West Virginia Chapter in February awarded students, staff, and alumni of Alderson Broaddus University (AB) with six first-place Crystal Awards for work that was completed in 2019.

AB’s extended learning division won three first-place awards that included the non-profit media relations tactic, integrated communication campaign and events, and observances campaign– less than seven days. AB’s extended learning division additionally won a regional first-place Diamond Award for the non-profit media relations tactic in 2020 from the PRSA’s East Central District, which serves West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania.

Students in two classes taught by Dr. Jim Owston also won first-place Crystal Awards. The COMM-220 Media Practicum classes during fall 2018 and spring 2019 constructed a radio story highlighting the history of WQAB, which had been donated to West Virginia Public Broadcasting (WVPB) in 2016. The story ran twice on WVPB in February 2019 and won the media relations tactic-student award.

The spring 2019 COMM-271 Video Production I class won the Crystal Award for the video tactic-student category. The class completed a five-minute video supporting AB’s advancement department for the 2019 Giving Day campaign.

Dr. Owston and his daughter, Lora, a 2019 graduate of AB, won a Crystal Award for media tactic-pro bono for their radio production celebrating the 100th anniversary of Decoration Day services along the Trace Fork of Big Creek in Boone County, W.Va. in May 2019.  This same tactic was awarded a regional media relations Diamond Award from the PRSA’s East Central District in 2020.

“The PRSA WV Chapter celebrates the best professional work of public relations practitioners through our annual Crystal Awards,” according to Jennifer Goddard, president of PRSA’s West Virginia chapter. “The outstanding work of Alderson Broaddus University was recognized as best of entries in six different categories and showed the highest level of achievement.”

With six Crystal Awards, Alderson Broaddus won the most first-place awards in the 2021 competition. Other significant winners included 84 Agency of Charleston, W.Va. who won the Best in West Virginia award for Manna Meal’s “Share a Meal” campaign. Their entry may have been PRSA-WV’s only perfect score ever; 84 Agency additionally won two Crystal Awards and an Honorable Mention. Fahlgren Mortine’s Charleston office won the most awards in the 2021 competition: one Crystal Award and seven Honorable Mentions.

Since 2016, AB students and faculty have amassed 59 public relations awards including regional and state best in show awards, 13 regional first-place Diamond Awards, and 30 statewide first-place Crystal Awards.
