FAFSA & Federal Aid

Federal Aid Programs

Most families qualify for some form of federal financial aid. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the gateway to Pell Grants, Direct Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized), Federal Work-Study, and the WV PROMISE Scholarship for state residents.

The FAFSA opens October 1 each year for the following academic year. AB recommends filing in October or November when possible. The Office of Financial Aid hosts free FAFSA-completion sessions every November (in person) and February (virtual) — students and parents are welcome to attend with documents in hand.

How To Use Aid

What To Do, In Order

  1. Apply for admission first — financial aid awards aren't finalized until you're admitted.
  2. File the FAFSA using AB's code 003806. Aim for the March 1 priority deadline.
  3. Submit any verification documents the financial aid office requests (about 30% of FAFSA filers are selected for verification).
  4. Receive your award letter — typically 2–4 weeks after admission and FAFSA submission.
  5. Talk with your counselor if anything is unclear — we'll walk through the package line by line.
  6. Accept your aid via MyAB. Decline any loans you don't want or need.
  7. Complete loan entrance counseling if borrowing federal loans (online, ~30 minutes).
  8. Sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN) for federal loans.
  9. Aid is disbursed at the start of each semester, applied first to tuition and fees, with any remainder refunded to you.
Don't Wait

Apply & File FAFSA Together

The earliest aid offers go to applicants who apply and file FAFSA in the fall. Don't miss out.
