Attention: Philippi Covered Bridge Closed through August 2016

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – On Wednesday, June 10, the Barbour County Office of Emergency Management and the Philippi Police Department announced that the historic Covered Bridge in Philippi will close for reconditioning and renovations starting Monday, June 15, 2015, and could possibly remain closed through August 2016. During this time, the Covered Bridge will be closed to both vehicular and foot traffic. Detour signs have been placed throughout Philippi to redirect traffic.

Renovations will include repairs to the interior and external woodwork of the bridge, electrical work, plumbing repairs and upgrades to the sprinkler system, and painting of the exterior of the bridge. The woodwork on the bridge is steadily deteriorating and in need of restoration. Cosmetic work to paint the bridge will be done following repairs.

Dr. Chen Appointed as Editor-in Chief for scientific journal

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Alderson Broaddus University Professor of Biology Dr. Yi (Charlie) Chen was recently invited to serve as Editor-In-Chief for the peer-reviewed scientific journal, Journal of Nutritional Medicine and Diet Care (JNMDC).

Editorial boards for journals usually include experts in the subject area that the journal focuses on, and the Editor-in-Chief oversees it. An editorial board is consisted of selected, unpaid experts in the academic field.

“This is regarded as an honorary position,” said Dr. Chen. “As an INBRE supported faculty member, I hope faculty and students from all over the world, especially those from small schools in the WV-INBRE network such as Alderson Broaddus University will submit their original research, reviews, case reports, commentaries, or short communications to JNMDC. I also hope that this journal will help to increase overall publications in the WV-INBRE network in the future.”

WV-INBRE stands for the West Virginia IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence. INBRE is a competitive federal research program established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2014. As part of the NIH Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, its mission is to establish a consortium among selected institutions of higher education in the State of West Virginia to enhance their capacity for educating and training their faculty and students in biomedical research.

JNMDC presents information on human and animal nutrition, dietetic practice and public health nutrition. It publishes articles related to WV-INBRE’s mission and focus on cell and molecular biology, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, and natural product research. Original research, reviews, case reports, commentaries, short communications etc., are welcome for possible publication.

The Journal of Nutritional Medicine and Diet Care is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that ensures fast publication of high quality articles. Two independent reviewers’ comments, followed by the editor’s decision, will be considered to publish the article. JNMDC is a permanent archive of nutritional information which under the open access category provides its global readers with free access to its content, thus serving the scientific community.

Dr. Joan Propst, provost/executive vice-president for academic affairs at AB states it is a pleasure to count Dr. Chen as a valued colleague and among the exceptional faculty at Alderson Broaddus.

“Charlie’s notoriety in his field, his research and his work in the classroom is well known and of exceptional quality,” said Propst. “His selection as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutritional Medicine and Diet Care is an honor he has certainly earned and is well deserved. What a privilege it is for me personally and for AB to have Charlie as a colleague and a friend.”

Dr. Chen currently serves on the Editorial Board for several peer-reviewed scientific journals including: Journal of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Research, Journal of Nutritional Medicine and Diet Care, SM Journal of Environmental Toxicology, and International Archives of Clinical Pharmacology.

AB Students Studying with Faculty in Yellowstone National Park

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – For the past week, students and faculty from the College of Science, Technology, & Math at Alderson Broaddus University have been studying the field ecology and geology of Yellowstone National Park.

This four-credit class gives students both in and out of the classroom experience. The lecture component took place during the 2015 spring semester, and the lab component consists of a two week field experience in the Black Hills region, Wyoming, Yellowstone National Park, and Grand Tetons National Park. During the experiential component of the class, the five students and two faculty members will observe the areas in a regional context.

The goal of this course is for students to obtain hands-on experience while traveling and working in the field. The students will interact with professional geologists, ecologists, foresters, and national park personnel along with resource extraction professionals.

Check out some of their adventures below! For more information on the class or about the College of Science, Technology, & Math please contact Dean Ross Brittain at
