Opera Workshop
The Alderson-Broaddus College Opera Workshop provides singers the opportunity to perform scenes from operas and operettas ranging from the Baroque period through contemporary American operas. Staged and directed by Lillian F. Long, associate professor of voice, the Opera Workshop productions are open to all singers but chosen specifically to guarantee that all junior and senior voice majors have lead roles, an opportunity usually reserved at other schools for only the most advanced singers. The semester’s work culminates in the popular “Opera Highlights: An Evening of Opera Scenes,” held on campus biennially.
Scenes from more than 35 different operas have been presented since the Opera Workshop began in 1986. Productions in recent years have included Down In The Valley, The Medium, Così fan tutte, Aida, and Little Women. Several Alderson-Broaddus College Opera Workshop singers have gone on to successfully pursue opera in graduate school and at the professional level.
