Dr. Hooi Yin Boey (piano, music history)
Dr. Hooi Yin Boey, assistant professor of music, enjoys teaching piano majors and class piano.
A native of Malaysia, Dr. Boey earned her doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance at West Virginia University, where she studied piano with Dr. James Miltenberger and Dr. Peter Amstutz, and piano pedagogy with Dr. Connie Arrau Sturm. At WVU, she served for five years as a graduate assistant in class piano, studio accompanying, and applied piano teaching; she was also an adjunct faculty member at Fairmont State University. Dr. Boey is active as recitalist and accompanist and has given scholarly presentations at the MTNA National Convention and at WVMEA State Convention. She has been an active member of MTNA and WVMTA since 1998. In 2004, she received WVU's MTNA Student Achievement Recognition (StAR) Award for excellence in academic achievement, successful teaching experience, and demonstrated leadership abilities. Dr. Boey has been a piano faculty member of West Virginia University Community Music Program since 1997. She is proficient in four languages in addition to English, including fluent spoken and written Mandarin, along with the Hokkien and Cantonese Chinese dialects and Bahasa Melayu, the official language of Malaysia.
