Board members of the following eight member institutions of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) met today, Friday, July 6, 2012, in Princeton, WV and via telephone conference: Alderson Broaddus University, Bluefield State College, Davis and Elkins College, Ohio Valley University, University of Charleston, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown was represented but not by the president.

Those present reaffirmed their commitment to rebuild the WVIAC in way that makes sure that it meets the needs of its members and collectively will strive to continue the unity of the Conference which has been a characteristic of the Conference since its inception in 1924.  It was further recognized that those present certainly understood each individual institution’s desire to explore various options which may be available to it.  It was the hope of the group that those still deciding would continue to view the WVIAC as a viable option and would choose to remain in the Conference.

All actions taken by the group will be presented for affirmation at the July 19, 2012 meeting of the Board during the annual WVIAC leadership retreat in Charleston.

“The WVIAC has been a part of the athletic landscape of the region for over eighty-five years,” said Dr. Michael Mihalyo, Chancellor at Davis and Elkins College. “The intent of the group meeting today was to work toward continuing and improving the student-athlete experience at all our member institutions within the framework of a model that has over the years done that very well.“

University of Charleston president Edwin Welch stated after the meeting, “We are committed to rebuilding the WVIAC to assure that it meets the needs of its member institutions and their student athletes.”
