Alderson Broaddus University Names Barry as 10th President

barryThe AB Board of Trustees and Governors is pleased to announce the naming of Dr. James “Tim” Barry as the official 10th president of Alderson Broaddus University. Dr. Barry has served as interim president since December 2015, and in his three years of service has garnered the trust and support of all campus constituencies with a solid track record of leadership. His impact is felt not just by faculty, staff, students, and alumni, but also by fellow college and university presidents and higher education organizations throughout the state.

“We were fortunate that Dr. Barry was in the pool of presidential candidates brought to us by The Registry in December 2015. He’s a perfect fit for AB at this point in time as we stabilize and position ourselves for continued success and future growth,” wrote Dr. Becky Hooman’81,’17 (honorary), chair of the Alderson Broaddus University Board of Trustees, in a message to the AB community.

Since Barry’s arrival, AB has undergone an innovative and creative planning process for the future of the University. Working alongside faculty, staff, and the AB Board of Trustees, Dr. Barry and his cabinet members drafted a strategic decision-making model to focus on three main areas to ensure AB’s excellence for the future: expanding academic programs, expanding enrollment, and increasing organizational efficiency.

“I’m honored and privileged to be the 10th president of Alderson Broaddus University,” said Dr. Barry. “These past three years serving as interim have been a wonderful experience for me, and I look forward to this time to continue to move the institution—along with the faculty, staff, and board of trustees—into greater success.”

Dr. Barry has extensive experience in higher education in various capacities, including serving as the former president of Mount Marty College in Yankton, South Dakota. He has been affiliated with The Registry of College and University Presidents, serving as vice president of advancement at Elmira College in Elmira, New York.

“We appreciate the opportunity to continue to work with The Registry in extending Dr. Barry’s tenure at AB,” said Hooman. “He has conducted himself as a permanent president would from the day of his arrival, and we’re extremely grateful for his continued service.”

Currently, Dr. Barry serves on the following boards: Appalachian College Association, Barbour County Chamber of Commerce (vice president), Barbour County Economic Development Authority, Great Midwest Athletic Conference, Independent College Enterprise (president), and West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities (president).

Dr. Barry is married to Ronda Barry, and together they have two children, Liz (Eric) Brewer and Matt (Kaci) Barry, who both reside with their families in the Kansas City area. The Barrys are also the proud grandparents of Jack, Molly, and Will Brewer.

Two Alderson Broaddus Staff Members Present at Quality Matters Conference

PrintDr. Andrea Bucklew, associate provost, and Mr. Nathan Fortney, instructional designer, were selected to represent Alderson Broaddus University as presenters at the Quality Matters (QM) Connect Conference scheduled for October 30-November 2, 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Quality Matters is a professional organization comprised globally of over 1000-member schools from across higher education, K-12 education, and educational publishing houses. The mission of Quality Matters is to promote and improve the quality of online education and student learning through the use of a standard quality assurance rubric and a system of professional development.

“Being asked to present at such a prestigious conference is a true testament to the quality of online education provided at Alderson Broaddus University,” said Bucklew. “Our number one priority is always to provide the highest quality learning experience for our students.”

Bucklew and Fortney will present “Unplugged: Using the QM Rubric Offline.” The presentation will provide information on the offline application of a QM Rubric to traditional seated and blended courses, how to apply general concepts to new and existing course design applications, and to identify strategies to foster student engagement using QM standards.

“It’s certainly an honor to be invited to speak at a conference of this magnitude, and to have the opportunity to highlight the commitment to quality our faculty demonstrate to our peers and colleagues from around the world,” said Fortney.

Alderson Broaddus University and New River CTC sign guaranteed admission agreement

Alderson Broaddus University and New River Community and Technical College signed an agreement today making it easier for students who earn an associate degree to earn their bachelor’s degree.

Our goal in partnering with community and technical colleges is to streamline the pathway for students to graduate with a high-quality degree that prepares them to be well-rounded, responsible citizens ready for the workforce.”

Under the new agreement, New River CTC students who maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) are guaranteed admission to Alderson Broaddus. Students transferring must meet the same prerequisites, GPA and other admission criteria when applying to Alderson Broaddus programs. The two institutions will work collaboratively to admit students and facilitate the process of admissions.

“This is a very exciting time for New River CTC,” said Interim President Dr. Kathy Butler. “This agreement with Alderson Broaddus gives our students another option to continue their education and makes achieving their educational goals more attainable.”

The 2019 Best Online Colleges By State rankings represents the online schools in each state that have the highest return on investment. All regionally accredited schools were analyzed based on two factors highly important to prospective students: median mid-career salary data and manually researched tuition rates.

Based on annual tuition and alumni salaries, AB ranked first in West Virginia for having an affordable tuition rate of $9,300 each year and the highest median salary of $91,000.

Alderson Broaddus offers two online programs: a bachelor’s degree completion program for licensed registered nurses (RN to BSN) and a master’s degree in teacher leader.

“This award is indicative of AB’s commitment to serving the needs of our students by offering high-quality, affordable, and flexible programs from an accredited school,” Associate Provost Andrea Bucklew said. “We hope the success of the nursing and education programs can serve as a model as we work to expand our distance education offerings into other disciplines.”

The RN to BSN program is 100% online, providing an affordable degree completion opportunity for associate degree or diploma nurses to complete a Bachelor of Science in nursing and advance their professional nursing career.

Chair of Nursing Kimberly White explains: “For an RN working full-time, the curriculum allows for a BSN degree to be completed in 18 months. The program gives registered nurses an opportunity to advance their education, and ultimately their careers, in a fast-paced curriculum, designed so they can also continue to work.”

The innovative program is built upon recent significant changes in healthcare, nursing practice, and educational theory. Students enrolled in AB’s online RN to BSN program have access to many of the same resources in-class students receive, including the University library, writing lab, and counseling services, all through an online format. Financial aid, grants, and loans are available to all eligible students. Additionally, each student is assigned a student support liaison to ensure their individual success.

The Master of Education in teacher leader program is delivered entirely online and is designed to prepare licensed Pre-K-12 teacher educators to take on new teacher leadership roles in the classroom, school, and district. The program has a full-time student and a part-time student track. The full-time option allows degree seekers to finish in one year and a summer session while the part-time option can be completed in two years and one summer session.

Dean of the College of Education & Music, Jeff Bush stated, “This program affords practicing teachers who want to stay in the classroom, the opportunity to do so while rising to leadership roles among their colleagues.”

The online course delivery will prepare teacher leaders to assume roles that include: mentor teacher, lead teacher, department chair, curriculum design specialist, academic coach, technology integration specialist, professional development specialist, and school improvement specialist.

AB Hosts Interprofessional Education Day, Partners with WV School of Osteopathic Medicine

Alderson Broaddus University and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine partnered for a day of hands-on training Wednesday, October 10. Allied health students from each of the institutions—including up and coming doctors from the osteopathic medical program and AB nursing and physician assistant studies majors—worked in teams in clinical settings throughout various clinical scenarios.

AB’s Dean of the College of Medical Sciences Thomas Moore stated, “Evidence suggests that interprofessional teams achieve better outcomes and that team-based care should become the norm in clinical practice.”

The ongoing collaboration between AB and the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine reinforces the importance of health care providers working with people from within their profession, with people outside the profession, and with patients and their families to provide patient-centered care to improve health outcomes. During each demonstration, AB students acted as educators, showcasing the knowledge learned inside and outside the classroom.

“It’s essential for each group to understand how to lead and how to follow,” said Clinical Education Director Rachel Propst. “We’re moving into a time in medicine where it’s crucial for nurses and physician assistants to share their areas of expertise with doctors.”

A helicopter demonstration by Air Evac Lifeteam, out of Summersville, took place and allowed students to witness and participate in a mock air evacuation. The day wrapped up with case study analysis to develop specific plans to improve the “gap” in health care delivery situations.

“Through all these demonstrations and clinical scenarios, we’re giving students opportunities to assume roles and begin to practice before they are out in the professional field,” said Propst. “We’re challenging students to be better nurses, better physician assistants, and better doctors to focus on the patient.”

The interprofessional learning experience prepares students for team-based practice to better deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
