As a graduate of Alderson Broaddus University, you are already a member of the AB Alumni Association. There are no dues required, no papers to fill out. Simply start taking advantage of the programs and get involved with our organizations.

The Alderson Broaddus Alumni Association is governed by a 25-member committee called the Alumni Council. The Council consists of 5 officers and 20 other alumni representatives who are elected to three-year terms.  Alumni Council meets once in the spring, once in the fall, and at Homecoming each year.

At the core of the Council’s mission is how best to promote and support the University’s recruitment and fundraising efforts, as well as to encourage all alumni to stay connected to the University. Each Council member serves on one of the following committees: Gifts Committee, Liaison Committee, Nominating Committee, PR Committee, or Special Events Committee. The majority of the Alumni Council’s work is conducted through these committees.

The Hu C. Myers PA Alumni Association was created in 2007 to provide professional growth of its members; to support the standards of excellence of the Alderson Broaddus University Physician Assistant Program; to periodically contribute financial funds to the AB PA Program Educational Programs ; to serve as a forum for both students and graduates, enhancing both networking activities and university relations; to support camaraderie among graduates and students of the AB PA Program; and to enhance the image and support of all AB PA graduates.

Hu C. and Avanelle Myers Award

The Hu C. and Avanelle Myers Award is awarded annually to Alderson Broaddus University graduate who has made notable achievements and possesses great leadership in the physician assistant profession.

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Hu C. and Avanelle Myers Award.

The nominee must be a graduate of the Alderson Broaddus University Physician Assistant Program, either undergraduate, graduate or masters.  Previous nominees will remain eligible each year.

Selection criteria includes the following: 1) number of years of service to the profession; 2) number of years of service with a professional state or national organization as an elected officer, board member, and/or committee chair; 3) community service involvement; 4) outstanding deeds or acts.

Selection committee will consist of the Director of the Physician Assistant Studies Program, the Director of the Alumni Relations, a tenured representative of the Physician Assistant Faculty, and a staff person from the Physician Assistant Department.  Final approval will be obtained from the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees of Alderson Broaddus University.

Those eligible to nominate a person to receive this award shall include any graduate of the Alderson Broaddus University Physician Assistant Program, any member of the selection committee, faculty and staff of Alderson Broaddus University, and/or colleagues/patients in a medical setting.

Regional alumni chapters provide the opportunity to make valuable personal and career connections and to be an advocate for Alderson Broaddus University.

What is an Alumni Chapter?

An Alumni Chapter is a group of alumni in a specific geographic location who want to keep in touch with Alderson Broaddus University and their fellow alumni.  There are four major principles, or components of an alumni chapter.  Each organized regional chapter should strive to incorporate each of the following principles into their organization.

Service – As a branch of the Alderson Broaddus University Alumni Association, each regional chapter will serve as an ambassador for the University in its own community. Whether the members of your chapter volunteer their time in a soup kitchen or help organize a canned food drive for a local food pantry, the efforts your chapter makes in a community carry the mark of the University.

Student Recruitment – Nothing could be more important than helping direct a potential student toward Alderson Broaddus University. This once again goes back to being an ambassador. Your chapter will be asked from time to time, to volunteer as admissions representatives. Your chapter may be assigned the task of sending communication (written or electronic) to prospective students to help strengthen a student’s decision to attend Alderson Broaddus University. You may be asked to host an event in your community inviting prospective students, parents, church youth groups, etc. to learn more about the University and to hear firsthand Chapter members’ experience as an AB student. Chapter members should always be on the lookout for high school juniors or seniors that should consider AB as their University of choice. Making student referrals is a great way to help in the admissions process.

Annual Fund – he major fundraising aspect of all regional alumni chapters needs to be raising the University’s Annual Fund. The AB Annual Fund is an ongoing effort to seek gifts from alumni and friends each year. These gifts are vital because they help the University meet expenses above and beyond funds generated by tuition. A gift of any size means more than most realize. Notable sources of university rankings and information only measure alumni satisfaction by one single factor – the percentage of alumni who give back, financially, to their alma mater. This percentage is considered the alumni participation rate. Fair or unfair, these sources share this satisfaction measure with prospective students and potential charitable donors – the people that can make an institution thrive and also make an earned degree even more commendable. The more money a regional alumni chapter raises for the AB Annual Fund, the stronger it will make Alderson Broaddus University by adding to its alumni participation rate. Regional alumni chapters should contact the Director of Annual Giving for more information on the AB Annual Fund.

Social – One of the most common ways to stay in touch with alumni in your area is by holding social functions for your chapter.  This is a great way to meet fellow alumni, relive the past or just catch up on what is happening at AB.  It is also a great occasion to network.  For those alumni and friends who are searching for employment, you may be able to find someone in your chapter that can point you in the right direction.  If you are a potential employer, you certainly can’t go wrong looking at a pool of fellow alumni.

How to Organize a Regional Alumni Chapter

There are a few steps that need to be adhered to before a chapter is even ready to be formed.  It takes dedication to start a chapter, so the AB Alumni Office wants to make sure a chapter is feasible for your area.

The following steps will outline for you the process by which a chapter becomes a reality.

  1. Notify the Director of Alumni Relations of your intent to start a chapter in your area.
  2. The Alumni Office will be able to determine how many AB alumni are in your area.  A benchmark for starting a chapter is approximately 50.
  3. Once it has been determined that there is a sufficient alumni population to support a chapter, phone calls need to be made and/or a survey needs to be sent to all those listed to determine interest.
  4. If the interest is there, then an organizational meeting will be scheduled to establish the chapter and elect officers.  This meeting will also be used to determine what direction the chapter should go, in terms of service, student recruitment, fundraising, and social gatherings.

Regional Chapter Guidelines

  • Host at least two organized events a year.  All official activities (including fundraisers) must be approved by the Alderson Broaddus University Alumni Office in consultation with the Vice President for Advancement.  Please notify the Alumni Office ASAP of a regional chapter event so that it can be placed on the Events Calendar.
  • The Alumni Office will assist with marketing these events.

The Alderson Broaddus University Student Alumni Association (SAA) is a newly formed organization with the sole purpose of creating stronger relationships between current students and AB University Alumni.

Following are the components of its mission:

  1. Encourage the growth of school spirit, traditions, and history throughout the Alderson Broaddus University community.
  2. Develop opportunities to create better relationships between the current students and alumni of Alderson Broaddus University.
  3. Produce a positive atmosphere and an enduring bond between students and the University.
  4. Serve and assist the University in all feasible ways.
