"The West Virginians" are one of the premier touring ensembles of the music department, serving as ambassadors for Alderson Broaddus University and for the state of West Virginia. This talented and energetic group brings a high quality musical presentation of great variety to churches, civic groups, and high schools across the region.
Each year members are selected based on their talents as musicians, their ability to present the wide variety of musical literature required by this group, their moral character, and their capacity to perform within the mission of the ensemble. The sacred music concerts offered by "The West Virginians" are chosen from nearly every style of worship music, including traditional church anthems, contemporary Christian, praise and worship, gospel, spirituals, etc. Although some of the music is accompanied with a 3-4 piece band (keyboard, guitar, bass, percussion), there are unaccompanied hymns and other more contemplative worship music as well. This group also presents a show of a secular entertainment nature. These selections are favorites chosen from popular music, Broadway musicals, vocal jazz, patriotic music, etc., and often include a novelty piece or beloved "oldie". The wide variety of musical offerings presented can almost ensure something for everyone.
Founded in 1977, this group has consistently been designated "Official Ambassadors for the state of West Virginia" by the Governor, and has had occasion to travel outside of the United States to countries including Canada, Puerto Rico, India, and Thailand. "The West Virginians" regularly produce recordings, and have had the opportunity to do televised performances.
