Preparing for a Career in Business
Graduates with a degree in Accounting from Alderson Broaddus University find themselves well prepared for a variety of entry level accounting positions. In order to better meet students’ needs, AB offers two different accounting degrees. The CPA track is ideal for students who are interested in a career in public accounting. It is a comprehensive degree which academically prepares students to sit for the Certified Public Accounting exam. The program also qualifies students for entry level jobs in government, industry and with not-for-profit organizations. The Management Accounting track includes a strong foundation in accounting and business and is designed to meet the demands of industry employers. This track is a preparation for the Certified Management Accounting exam.
Personal & Individual Attention from Experienced and Caring Faculty
Students will have many opportunities for involvement in organizations that will help to develop leadership skills and attract future employers. Phi Beta Lambda, the local chapter of a national organization for business students, gives the opportunity to enhance leadership and team member skills by providing services to the community and developing friendships that will last a lifetime. S.I.F.E. (Students in Free Enterprise) is a national student organization that teaches students an understanding of market economics and business operations. This organization is a partnership between higher education and business which enables students to build connections with such companies as: Wal-Mart, DEL Labs, Hallmark, Kraft, Arthur Anderson, AT&T, Sears, Black & Decker, General Electric, and Coca-Cola. Partners in Excellence is a business advisory program through which business students have the opportunity to interact and network with a variety of business leaders.
Valuable Internship Experience
Accounting internships are available with a variety of both profit and not-for-profit organizations in the area. Students participating in these internships find an opportunity for quality learning while participating in a “hands on” business setting. An internship provides a valuable learning opportunity in a highly personal job market.
High Quality Academics
From lively classroom discussions to working with state-of-the-art computer equipment and software, our academic program emphasizes quality instruction and learning. A campus wide computer network provides one station for every seven students, allowing for communication access across campus or across the globe via e-mail and the internet. Accounting students will use accounting software and spreadsheets in a variety of courses and applications. Students will also gain practical experience using business application software and multimedia presentation technology used by businesses today.
Education in a Global Environment
The accounting major includes several courses with an international content. These courses, combined with a strong liberal arts curriculum, provide an excellent foundation for a finance career in a global environment. Students have the opportunity to further their knowledge of other cultures through the international studies program at AB which offers a full semester of study and travel in Europe.

ADDITIONAL HOURS: Students must be cognizant that 150 hours of coursework is required to sit for the CPA Examination. This may include taking a variety of additional courses to be selected as the student desires. Accounting advisors will insure students are aware of this 150 hour requirement and assist them to plan accordingly.

Among requirements for graduation, the student must have a grade point average of 2.00 in the major, have 120 credit hours, and must pass a comprehensive examination, planned and administered by the major division or department.
